Shaping the future of the European ready-to-wear industry

New research indicates that advanced fiber materials, digital manufacturing and supply chains, new sustainability and customer-centric business models, and markets that are allowed to enter growth will shape the future of European textile and fashion industries.

The Strategic Innovation and Research Agenda (SIRA) was held in Brussels in mid-October (2016) in "European Textiles-going digital, going high-tech" It was announced at the conference that the conference was organized by the European Technology Platform for the Future of Textiles and Clothing (Textile ETP). About 150 participants from 24 countries attended the meeting.

SIRA - entitled "Towards a 4th Industrial Revolution of Textiles and Clothing" - outlines key innovation themes and research priorities and is expected to drive and shape European textiles over the next decade And the future of the apparel industry. It is jointly developed by more than 100 textile, technology and research experts from across Europe.

TextileETP President Paolo Canonico said at the conference: "In the process of the first strategic development process in 2006, we foresee an industry trend. In the past ten years, the industry is getting rid of production and supporting high value-added products in niche markets. And has played a very strong role."

According to TextileETP, the EU textile and apparel industry's turnover has decreased by 19%, while labor productivity has grown by 36%, and exports outside the EU have grown by 37%.

"Since the economic crisis of 2009, this trend has been further accelerated. By 2015, almost all key figures in the industry, including the number of employed people, will grow positively. For the foreseeable future, this trend can continue, providing research and innovation, Education and training, as well as subtle support for technology transfer to many small companies at the EU, national and regional levels."

The four strategic innovation themes have a significant impact on the future development of the European textile and apparel industry:

- Smart, high-performance materials: identified priorities include new and improved high-performance fibers, new 1D, 2D and 3D fiber structures, versatile textile surfaces and embedded ICT-enabled electronic textiles.

- Advanced digital manufacturing, value chain and business models: complex textile and composite structures, digital and flexible production processes and new manufacturing technologies in factories, virtual model making and fiber (and textile) based materials and product design, Textile fashion complete value chain and digital solutions created by new digital business models.

- Recycling economy and resource efficiency: This will be through the development of more water and energy-efficient textile processing technologies, new recycling concepts and technologies, the development of alternatives to hazardous process chemicals, the use of biochemical and bio-based materials solutions, and improved production. Utilization of natural fiber sources from Europe.

- An attractive growth market offering high value-added solutions: working with suppliers and end users. It is not expected until 2025 that the industry will create 600,000 jobs. To ensure success, Europe must support and further develop the world's leading textile education and training infrastructure in order to protect specialized traditional technologies and knowledge and gain new qualifications for the future textile business.

The agenda lists 19 research priorities and more than 90 specific research topics.

SIRA said: "In the coming months and years, the European Textile and Apparel Research and Innovation Community, organized by the European Technology Platform, will work with EU research and innovation decision makers, program managers and related industrial sectors. Work closely with partners in the technology sector to further improve collaborative research and innovation in textiles in Europe."
