Ruby family lineage

红宝石的家族血统

ruby

The ruby texture is hard and the hardness is only under the diamond. Its color is bright red and glamorous, and it can be called the "crown crown of red gems". The magnificent and luxurious ruby is the king of gems, the treasure of treasure, and its advantages exceed all gems.

Most of the natural rubies come from Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka, China, Xinjiang, China, Yunnan, etc.), Africa, Oceania (Australia), and the Americas (Montana and South Carolina, USA). Natural rubies are very rare and very precious.

Since ancient times, rubies have a very high status. There is a saying in the ancient West that God created 12 kinds of gems when he created everything, the most precious of which is ruby. However, for rubies, pedigree is very important. Now let's take a look at the origins of several important rubies and uncover the reasons why the price difference between rubies and different bloodlines is so great.

I. Myanmar

Burmese rubies have an important position in the international jewellery market and have long been known for producing "pigeon red" rubies. Burmese rubies have two origins:

The ruby produced by Mogok has a bright red hue, from rose red to red. "Pigeon Blood" is a high-saturation, pure red color that is the highest quality. Rubies that also reach the "pigeon red", the price of those born in Myanmar is higher than other places of origin. Rubies have been found in this valley for centuries, but production is now exhausted. Even though the rubies produced there are still the best in the world. Known as the "pigeon red", the wiper ruby is the world's recognized gemstone.

Meng Su is also a Burma, a new ruby found in the 1990s, about 200 kilometers southeast of Mogok. The ruby produced by Meng Su is mostly brownish red and deep purple. Although there is no high quality of ruby in the Mogok area, the ruby of the Monsin area has a peculiar feature, which is that it will produce a "Dabez" ruby with six stars that will not move.

Second, Thailand

The color of the ruby in Thailand is high due to the high content of iron (Fe) in the impurity elements. The color is darker and the transparency is lower. It is usually dark red to light brownish red, and rarely achieves the quality of high quality Burmese rubies. But not all Thai rubies are darker in color, and there are also many bright and quality people. Thai rubies were once comparable to Burmese rubies in saturated shades, but resources and production are also fading.

At present, although Thailand is still the number one supply of rubies in the world, the rubies produced are mainly from Myanmar and Cambodia. These exotic ruby materials are processed and processed in Thailand before entering the sales market.

Features:

(1) color and fluorescence

The ruby color of this area is from red to deep red, maroon and magenta, which are due to the inclusion of impurity elements such as Fe and Ti. The fluorescence of rubies in Thailand is also weakened by the higher Fe content, and even quenched.

(2) Twin and hydrated aluminum ore

The twin crystals are very developed. Two or three sets of nearly vertical bimorphs are interspersed with each other. Three sets of nearly perpendicular to each other are formed on the intersection of three different directions of twin planes. The tubular body has a whisker and sometimes forms a branch, which is an important feature of the Thai ruby.

(3) Crystal and gas-liquid inclusions

The crystal inclusions are colorless and transparent plagioclase crystals, yellowish hexagonal apatite inclusions, dark red eucalyptus garnet crystals and black granular pyrrhotite crystals.

The gas-liquid inclusions are often aggregated into fingerprint-like feathers and discs. The center of the plate-like inclusions is often distributed with dissolved apatite, garnet and pyrrhotite crystals. The disk-like liquid inclusions around the crystal form a similar The "fried egg" pattern is another typical feature of Thai rubies.

Third, Sri Lanka

A large number of rubies are produced in southeastern Sri Lanka. It is a world-famous ruby producing area and is known as the “Gem City”, especially for producing high-quality star rubies.

Ruby is distinguished from other places by its colorful colors. It consists of a series of intermediate transition colors of light red and red. Another feature of the Sri Lankan ruby is that the interior of the gemstone can be seen to vary from deep to light tones.

Sri Lankan rubies are known for their high transparency and soft color. Moreover, the particles are larger, and their color changes greatly, from light red to red, pink, brownish red or maroon to cherry red. The high-end products are bright red with a slight pink and yellow tone, often called cherry red or water red. In addition, the ribbon is developed, and the rutile needle is fine, long and evenly distributed. Sri Lanka's ruby ribbon is obvious and often shows a hexagon.

The 138.7-carat "Rosely Reef" star-shaped ruby, now in the National Museum of the United States, comes from here.

4. Mozambique

With the Mozambique Ruby entering the Bangkok market in 2006, due to its color close to Burmese rubies, the output is large and unheated can reach 3 carats. In addition, the interior of the granule is thicker and shorter, and the acicular inclusions oriented at 60/120 degrees are characteristic inclusions, which is a typical identification feature of Mozambique rubies.

The crystals of the original stone of Mozambique ruby are relatively complete, showing a relatively flat crystal plane. Its color distribution is uniform, pure to the color of Burmese rubies. Compared with rubies from other places, Mozambique's ruby crystals are more complete. And such high-quality Mozambique rubies are worth investing in and collecting.

V. Tanzania

Tanzania is a small number of countries producing rubies outside of Asia. Most of the rubies produced in Tanzania are pink and uneven in color. Because of its poor quality, the price is relatively low.

It is worth mentioning that the ruby from the Wenza mining area in central Tanzania has a very high transparency and has become the new favorite in the international jewelry exhibition in recent years.

VI. Vietnam

The ruby color of Vietnam is between the Burmese ruby and the Thai ruby, which is purple, reddish purple. The overall color is between the Burmese ruby and the Thai ruby, which was discovered in the 1980s. The fissure develops. The color also shows a flowing, swirling structure with some pink, orange, or even a colorless, blue ribbon.
